Collaborative project with Jamie Macchiusi at PICA

Harking back to its Perth Boys' School roots, for one day only, PICA's Central Gallery will be returned to a gym with Exhibition Match - a Utopian eight-hour basketball game.

The main space will be transformed into a basketball half-court for a continuous game of 3-on-3, complete with a warm up area and a refreshment stand.

To kick-off their Studio Residencies, Jamie Macchiusi and Andrew Varano are inviting over 50 players into the galleryturned-arena proving that art is more than a spectator sport!

Be strong in body, clean in mind, lofty in ideals (Naismith, J.).

The public are invited to join on court or are welcome to watch the game unfold from PICA's upstairs balcony.

PICA Residency

Andrew Varano will be approaching his studio residency as an opportunity to bring together the varied and often completely disparate concerns of his last three years at art school. Working against the broad academic opinion, an obviously futile effort will be made to develop a master narrative that will attempt to place ideas such as gloablisation, societal collapse, the readymade, Le Corbusier's modular, isolation, and pragmatism into a single 'theory of everything'.

Peter McCaughey Opens 'The Building Show'

The Building Show was a one-night-only artist run initiative featuring Tim Carter, Jason Hansma, Shannon Lyons, Elise | Jurgen, Jamie Macchiusi and Andrew Varano. The show was opened by Glasgow artist Peter McCaughey and took place in a run down building in the centre of Perth.

"The direction of movement through The Building Show will be choreographed by the architecture - a long linear waltz upwards through three floors on a sagging and musty smelling wooden staircase which winds ultimately towards a dead end. The work will be situated inside this barely functioning site; all decay and history and quiet. This is the never seen, unloved bowels of a building whose façade, which facilitates a country style clothing boutique and a multi-storey body piercing shop, sees thousands of people pass every day. If on any normal day any one of these passersby were able to look through the walls they would see nothing special, only a dim stillness accented with sporadic movements by a tenant quickly climbing up the stairs in pursuit of the bathrooms.

The way that The Building Show will be conducted is dictated by the nature of the inhabited space and its current condition. This isn’t a gallery. The artists here must respond to a space free of white walls with a floor plan absolutely unforgiving to conventional art installation. For this one night the artists will negotiate the imposing constraints and potential opportunities of this building in an attempt to transcend its common functionality."

Laptop was programmed to work out the average colour of the field of view and place this colour into a grid at regular intervals (between 1 and 15 seconds). By doing so changes of light and colour over time could be recorded. Each image set contains a starting and ending picture and a generated grid image, which shows the progression between the two images.

Laptop was programmed to take incoming video through its webcam and use the brightness values and pixel position data to create a multicoloured grid. Each square represents 2 - 3 seconds. Laptop was made to watch films and to generate postproduction artworks in realtime.
